Cancer Ward examines the relationship of a group of people in the cancer ward of a provincial Soviet hospital in 1955, two years after Stalin's death. We see them under normal circumstances, and also reexamined at the eleventh hour of illness. Together they represent a remarkable cross-section of contemporary Russian characters and attitudes. The experiences of the central character, Oleg Kostoglotov, closely reflect the author's own: Solzhenitsyn himself became a patient in a cancer ward in the mid-1950s, on his release from a labor camp, and later recovered. Translated by Nicholas Bethell and David Burg.

  • Magnificent! A Masterpiece of Literature!

The plot, the characters, the intimate detail make this one of the masterpieces of literature. Contains some amazing statements:

The plot, the characters, the intimate detail make this one of the masterpieces of literature. Contains some amazing statements:
"What about your cheerfulness? You didn't acquire that in the camps, did you?" "Why not? I'm cheerful because I'm used to losing everything."
"Do you remember that nurse ....?" he continued. "She used to say. 'Oh dear, why am I being so rude to the patients? It's time I went in as a patient again ....'"
"One should never direct people towards happiness, because happiness too is an idol of the market-place. One should direct people towards mutual affection. A beast gnawing at its prey can be happy too, but only human beings can feel affection for each other, and this is the highest achievement they can aspire to."
This is just a selection of the magnificent truths in this great book!
