Book Description
Damen is a warrior hero to his people, and the rightful heir to the throne of Akielos, but when his half brother seizes power, Damen is captured, stripped of his identity, and sent to serve the prince of an enemy nation as a pleasure slave.
Beautiful, manipulative and deadly, his new master Prince Laurent epitomizes the worst of the court at Vere. But in the lethal political web of the Veretian court, nothing is as it seems, and when Damen finds himself caught up in a play for the throne, he must work together with Laurent to survive and save his country.
For Damen, there is just one rule: never, ever reveal his true identity. Because the one man Damen needs is the one man who has more reason to hate him than anyone else...

    That was just... WOAH.

I knew the book would worth the reading even before starting it, and yet I didn't expect this and at this level: wonderfully built and complex characters, compelling story, fabulous characters, well-devised setting, magnetic characters... moreover, it is gorgeously written. Pacat's style actually stands up in the panorama of na and ya usually flat writing. It is not ostentatious or anything, but it's articulate, elegant and still fully enjoyable.

I had never read anything of this genre before, and I didn't regret the choice to read Captive Prince. My fear was I'd find out it was focused only on the romance, instead I ended up caught in a witty plot adequately provided with twisted machinations, games of power and ambiguos relatives who, you can bet, want you dead. That may be a little clichéd, but I liked it all the same.
Also, the book contains some explicit scenes of violence. I'm not really one to enjoy such things and in fact I didn't, but I admire Pacat for how she handled them. She never overdoes, never exaggerates as a lesser writer would have done only in order to attract a biggest audience -another proof of her professonalism.

Still, I know Pacat can do more. I'm pretty sure that, if a good beginning bodes well, the second installment will be a five-star book. I'm already looking forward to it.

"Is there anyone at this court who isn't my enemy?"
"Not if I can help it."

    GUILTY PLEASURE ALERT!
