It is barely three months since the murder of his wife and Thomas Lynley takes to the South-West Coast Path in Cornwall, determined to walk its length in an attempt to distract himself from his loss. On the forty-third day of this walk, he sees a cliff climber fall to his death, apparently witnessed by a surfer in a nearby cove. Shortly afterwards, Lynley encounters a young woman from Bristol whose personal history is a blank before her thirteenth year. These events propel him into a case that brings Barbara Havers from London and thrusts both detectives into a world where revenge is only one of the motives they must sift through to identify a killer.

talk about disappointment. you cannot invent smashing characters like linley and havers and then sacrifice them to a crowd of tedious people with too many (and not interesting in the least) problems. the story seems promising at the beginning, with tommy in deep distress because of What You Know Of, but takes the wrong and boring path when he is not there. the novel only comes to life when havers pops up. i was tempted not to finish it - it would have been blasphemy for a loving fan, so i endured it to the final page.

  • I really love E. George, and this in particular is one of my favourites. I liked all the sub-plots. While in some of her other novels the side-character were too weak and uninteresting, in this one they were all well defined, and their personal dramas developed along the main storyline.

I just hope the next one will be as good as this, or - why not? - even better!

The plot is that a young man dies while abseiling down a cliff on Cornwall's coast; the death is no accident and the police have to discover who sabotaged the climbing equipment. Unlike those Hollywood type of fast moving thriller or detective novels, I found I’m quite enjoy this simple death case but with a little more extent. After the senseless murder of his wife Helen, Detective Superintendent Thomas Lynley has spent six solitary weeks hiking the bleak and rugged coastline to Cornwall, discovers the body and seeks help from Daidre Trahir, a veterinarian who owns a nearby cottage. Daidre Trahair claims not to recognize the victim. She's lying, but Lynley doesn't relay this information to DI Bea Hannaford, now in charge of the case. Instead he calls his former partner, Barbara Havers, and asks her to check out Trahair's background. Havers, under orders from the Yard to help the understaffed Hannaford and nudge Lynley toward returning, heads for Cornwall, where there's no shortage of suspects as to who cut Santo Kerne's climbing gear: Madlyn Angarrack as discarded lovers, Lew Angarrack avenging a daughter’s broken heart; Ben Kerne as disappointed fathers, Daidre Trahair putting being the Other Woman by ridding herself of the man and long-ago school chums back to Ben’s teenage time. Every one of them has a secret worth lying to protect, but can Lynley let go of the past long enough to solve a most devious and carefully planned crime?
