After winning the brutal Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen returns to her district, hoping for a peaceful future. But Katniss starts to hear rumours of a deadly rebellion against the Capitol. A rebellion that she and Peeta have helped to create. As Katniss and Peeta are forced to visit the districts on the Capitol's cruel Victory Tour, the stakes are higher than ever. Unless Katniss and Peeta can convince the world that they are still lost in their love for each other, the consequences will be horrifying. This is the terrifying sequel to "The Hunger Games".

  • Catching Fire By Suzanne Collins

Fans of The Hunger Games, the riveting and wildly popular novel by Suzanne Collins, have been eagerly awaiting the publication of the second book in the trilogy, Catching Fire on September 1. And they won’t be disappointed. Katniss Everdeen hails fro ... (read full critics)

  • Constant Craving

Series sell. Call it a trilogy, smack a number on it, pump out the books at the rate of one a year. Novelists everywhere lament the diminished prospects for the proper, stand-alone novel, though this is a whole lot of foolishness. If anything, the as ... (read full critics)

I loved that we learned more about the other district, and the previous games, but I was quite confused by the ending... actually if there's one thing I don't like is trilogies in witch the first book could stand on its own, but second and third are like one book split in half.
Very curious about how everything is going to turn out.

  • Not as exciting or good as the first one, but still good. The novelty of the whole world and Games was no longer there, but it was interesting to see how Suzanne Collins managed to switch up the plot so that it wasn't repeating the first book.

  • Great allegory of totalitarianism

Catching Fire is so much more than a sequel. It continues to thrill, yes, but it does an amazing job in developing Katniss's character and bringing out the moral message behind the Capitol's downfall.

Catching Fire is so much more than a sequel. It continues to thrill, yes, but it does an amazing job in developing Katniss's character and bringing out the moral message behind the Capitol's downfall.

We can all relate to our heroine Katniss. She can be foolish, impulsive, even helpless. But she can also be crafty, intuitive, and determined. One moment she's a clueless follower; next moment she's an inspiring icon. It's her multi-dimensional character that really grabs our heart. Once more it shows that heroes aren't born; they're made.

The story is also a potent allegory of totalitarianism gone too far. You can generally control people to a certain extent, for most are docile and willing to be herded, as long as there are vents through which people can safely air their anger. But if you grip too tight, like trying to monitor every action and quash every hope, then people will rebel. The Quell is turning into a Swell, the uprising of every district against the Capitol. Its eventual demise is a direct consequence of its own suppressive actions.

At the end of Catching Fire, we see what kind of heroine Katniss really is. Our protagonist turns out to be a mere pawn, an unwitting icon thrown into the limelight for people to follow. But ironically, she has become this unifying symbol precisely because of her flaws and ignorance.

Suzanne Collins is now my favorite author. Let's hope she can continue to keep us hungry and alight in Book 3!

  • The beginning was a little boring and i was worried that this was the kind of overhyped book that fizzles after its predecessor. I am glad i was wrong - still as exciting as ever. I really like reading about the stuff in the arena.
