Saramago 200%, not to be missed.

If I was a writer, this is the book I would love to have written. Every character is sculptured in Saramago's hypnotizing writing.

Strano, profondo.
Inexplicable epidemic of blindness strikes on unnamed city.

Claustrophobic, unnerving, disturbing. Everybody becomes blind, the system collapses and the worst sides of humans come to the (white) light.
By the way, the movie is also quite good, very much the book.
