This book won a 2005 Michael L Printz Honor Book Award. This award is given for literary value in young adult literature.I thought this was a very interesting book. This book won a 2005 Michael L Printz Honor Book Award. This award is given for literary value in young adult literature.I thought this was a very interesting book. I would definately recommend it to others--YA boys and girls. I think it would appeal to a wide range of readers. It was not a fast paced read, however, I always wanted to know what would happen next.The topic really is quite heart wrenching and tragic. I can't even imagine living as these families do. The author really gives the reader some in-sight to what the situation in Africa is like with the spread of AIDS and why it continues to spread at such high rates compared to the US. I would love to try this next year for book club.Quotesp35 New cemeteries overflow as fast as they open. Officially it's because of pneumonia, TB, and cancer. But that's a lie, and everyone knows it.The real reason the dead are piling up is because of something else. A disease too scary to name out loud. If people say you have it, you can lose your job. But even worse is dying alone in fear and shame with a lie." --I think this quote sums up why AIDS has spread so much in Africa. The people are not willing to admit there is a problem, at least that is the impression I get from this work of fiction. I would like to do a little more digging and see what is the truth.
