With the original edition on my bookshelf, I only read the new chapter and revised epilogue of this edition. The new author Merle Goldman seems to be more calm and neutral, with a slight optimistic overtone, in her account of the post-Mao reform era

An eloquent account of history from one of the most respected Chinese historians from the West, late John King Fairbank. It is always refreshing and eye-opening to read history of my country through a different pair of eyes.
