Set against the turbulent political times and the collision of East and West in 1930's China, this autobiography describes the complexities of Adeline Yen Mah's relationships with her stepmother and siblings, and the trauma of her parents' deaths.

This is a true story about a young girl who lives in China and her family hates her apart from her Aunt Baba. It is a sad story but it is really gripping and I loved it.

One of the most inspiring stories during my high school
I cried while I read. Truly inspiring.

I loved this was so sad and very cruel how everyone in her treated especially her step-mom. I mean getting blamed for something thats completely not her fault? Im glad she has had a better future then her childhood.

I feel very moved coz the encouraging words of Ye Ye and Aunt Baba help Adeline understand she's unique and precious, and persist in the face of helplessness.

Adeline must actually be very proud of her upbringing experience and kept on writing about it.
I don't find any difference in content between this book and her other book "falling leaves"
