The first three essays in this volume treat matters of specific concern to Christians and Jews since the sixteenth century. The last two examine the broad cultural contexts within which Christians, with vastly different goals in mind, confronted the Turks in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and the Chinese in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
