Hak Nam, City of Darkness, the old Walled City of Kowloon was an unmistakable presence in the midst of urban Hong Kong. Rising as many as 15 storeys high, this 6.5 acres of solid building was also home to 35,000 people. How did it come about? And how was it possible for so many people to live and work in such difficult conditions? Before its final clearance in 1992, Greg Girard and Ian Lambot spent four years exploring the City, talking to its inhabitants and photographing them at work or in their homes. With 320 photographs, 32 extended interviews and essays on the City’s history and character. City of Darkness is an extraordinary portrait of a unique community, now vanished forever.

It is probably the best photographic record of the daily lives of the notorious walled city before its demolishment.

anyone who are interested in the history/truth/daily lives of this monster-like & "organic" city should read it!

Should the walled city still survive, we wouldn't need to spend billions & billions of dollars to "create" new but unauthentic tourist spots. You can imagine how attractive the walled city is to the westerners, as it contained all erotic and exotic elements tourists are looking for.
