Magic is dangerous—but love is more dangerous still.

When Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother in Victorian England, something terrifying is waiting for her in London's Downworld. Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, who are members of a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she has the power to transform into another person. The Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the Club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa's power for his own. Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons. She soon finds herself fascinated by—and torn between—two best friends: James, whose fragile beauty hides a deadly secret, and Will, whose volatile moods keep everyone at arm's length. As their search draws them deep into a plot that threatens to destroy the Shadowhunters, Tessa realizes that she may need to choose between saving her brother and helping her new friends save the world...and that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.

Certo c'è da dire che alcune scene sono un po' tanto prevedibili (Con tanto di cattivi e colpi di scena), però leggerlo è stato un piacere!

"Miss Gray! Come out now, and we won't hurt you!"

"Miss Gray! Come out now, and we won't hurt you!"
    "They're lying," Tessa said quickly.
"Oh, do you really think so?".

"I will thank you NOT to speak of my family," Gabriel snarled.
"How unfortunate that the prospect of your gratitude is not a tempting one," Will said.
    [...] "What?" Gabriel growled.
"He means," Jem clarified, "that he doesn't care for your thanks."

Notina all'edizione: che bellezza il formato per noi povere talpine! E la copertina.. ç_ç
Però che diamine, il libro appena lo guardi si rovina sul dorso. ARGH.

"Indeed. Perhaps, if we are fortunate, we can still catch syphilis." "

    "Fruits fail and love dies and time ranges;
Thou art fed with perpetual breath,
    And alive after infinite changes,
    And fresh from the kisses of death;
    Of languors rekindled and rallied,
    Of barren delights and unclean,
Things monstrous and fruitless, a pallid
    And poisonous queen.
    (Algernon Charles Swinburne, "Dolores")"

"May make my heart as a millstone, set my face as a flint,
Cheat and be cheated, and die: who knows? we are ashes and dust.
    (Alfred, Lord Tennyson, "Maud") "

    "We are all men,
In our own natures frail, and capable
Of our flesh; few are angels
    (Shakespeare, King Henry VIII)"

"Whatever you are physically -all those things matter less than what your heart contains. If you have the soul of a warrior, you are a warrior. Whatever the color, the shape, the design, the shade that conceals it, the flame inside the lamp remains the same. You are that flame."

" "Don't look pleased with yourself. When Will says 'enterprising' he means 'morally deficient'"
"No, I mean enterprising," said Will. "When I mean morally deficient, I say, 'Now, that's something I would have done.'" "

"Seal’d her mine from her first sweet breath.
Mine, mine by a right, from birth till death.
    Mine, mine–our fathers have sworn.
    (Alfred, Lord Tennyson, "Maud") "

"Yet each man kills the thing he loves
By each let this be heard.
Some do it with a bitter look,
    Some with a flattering word.
The coward does it with a kiss,
The brave man with a sword!

(Oscar Wilde, "The Ballad of the Reading Gaol")"

  • Book was great fell in love with Jem and Will the story never dragged and kept you wanting to read more. The ending is a cliff hanger and honestly I wanted more romance but the action made up for it.
