"Come Dio Comanda" lacks the caricatural force and the humorous depiction of the characters that we found in Ammaniti's previous novels. Here the reader is presented once more with the typical plot construction that this writer deploys almost identically in all of his books - the coming together of several parallel stories into a final, hopeless and anti-heroic tragedy. The theme of the God/father as the agent of the story is an interesting -though not very developed- theme of the novel. To sum up, in my opinion this book demonstrates the incapability- so far- on Ammaniti's part to outlive his literary identity as a 'young cannibal' and grow into a more mature writer.
