Finished this book yesterday while my internet was down (Ahh how much I have forgotten its nice to relax with a book on a steamy Roman evening. Svevo is in so many senses, a thoroughly French novelist which is unusual for an Italian. Like French writers I find him overly introspective, morally lacerated, solipsistic (in a Sartrean sense), morbidly self-conscious and brimming with weltschmerz. His comedic approach is often acerbic and bile-encrusted. The Baudelaire jet-black sort that sometimes makes my remember how much Svevo (and I) have a fascination with the gesture and the spoken word.
