  The late Carl Sagan was as adept at writing for the masses as he was teaching and discovering the wonders of the universe. Sagan's hero is a young, strong-willed female scientist (protrayed beautifully by Jody Foster in the movie)who not only wants contact with an alien race but wants to be that contact herself! This is not "Alien Spidermen Chew Up Memphis," but is a serious look into how contact may one day come about and what it will mean to our planet!

• A science fiction novel by the most influential nonfiction writer in my early teens. It's a good, smart story but like all of Sagan's books there's clearly also a gentle argument for secularism and a life devoted to science.
