In Coraline's family's new flat there's a locked door. On the other side is a brick wall—until Coraline unlocks the door . . . and finds a passage to another flat in another house just like her own.

Only different.

The food is better there. Books have pictures that writhe and crawl and shimmer. And there's another mother and father there who want Coraline to be their little girl. They want to change her and keep her with them. . . . Forever.

Coraline is an extraordinary fairy tale/nightmare from the uniquely skewed imagination of #1 New York Times bestselling author Neil Gaiman.

Excellently creepy novel from the ever-inventive mind of Neil Gaiman.

As I was reading Coraline and thinking of the upcoming movie, I thought for sure (but mistakenly) that Tim Burton (Edward Scissorhands, BeetleJuice, Nightmare Before Christmas) must be the director of this film because that's the way I visualized the unfolding story as I read. It is at once scary and entertaining with descriptions of repulsive creatures reminiscent of Susan Sarandon's Alien days. After reading Gaiman's The Graveyard Book, one sees recurring themes of good v. evil. Score one for the white hats as good wins once again in the form of a plucky little girl named Coraline and a talking black cat! An effortless read, the words fly off the page. Maybe I am becoming a lover of fantasy?!
