The day after they moved in, Coraline went exploring....

In Coraline's family's new flat are twenty-one window and fourteen doors. Thirteen of the doors open and close, The fourteenth is locked, and on the other side is only a brick wall, until the day Coraline unlocks the door to find a passage to another flat in another house just like her own.

Only it's different....

At first, things seem marvelous in the other flat. The food is better. The toy box is filled with wind-up angels that flutter around the bedroom. But there's another mother, and another father, and they want Coraline to stay with them and be their little girl. They want to change her and never let her go.

Other children are trapped there as well, lost souls behind the mirrors. Coraline is their only hope of rescue. She will have to fight with all her wits if she is to save the lost children, her ordinary life, and herself.

Performed by Neil Gaiman
With original music by The Gothic Archies

Excellently creepy novel from the ever-inventive mind of Neil Gaiman.

    Horror-fantasy for children

I read this book for my eldest son. We already enjoyed the movie and now we enjoyed the book (the Dutch translation). Very creepy sometimes, and very well written. Beautiful language you won't find in children's books all that often.

The story is about Coraline Jones who has one more week of summer holiday to spend alone in the house to which she just moved with her parents. The latter don't have much time to play with her, so she sets out to explore the house and its surroundings.
Then she finds a strange door in one of the unused rooms. Behind it she finds a world that mirrors her own, but is slightly different. At first she thinks this world is more interesting, until things begin to change for the worse.

    Fascinating Fantastic Fairy-tale

And, after reading it, I can assure that it is THE fairy tale. Non in the childish meaning of the term, but in the fact that it REALLY teaches us that evils can be beaten.
Coraline is an amazing book, it's a story that can be read at various levels, since it will make children thrill and adults frighten.
Maybe it's the shortest novel by Neil, maybe it's children-targeted. Well, who cares? It just DESERVES to be read, whether you're eight or eighty. That's all.

Looking forward to watching the movie.

Ps. Sorry for the capital letters, please read them as if they are in italics.

  • Quite wired... Too much colours, it seems artificial, palstic wrapped...
It's not so dark as I thought

  • When you're scared but you still do it anyway, that's brave...

Coraline loves to explore. She gets bored at home when she can't go out, so when her parents tell her to explore the house on a rainy day, that's what she does. Coraline loves to explore. She gets bored at home when she can't go out, so when her parents tell her to explore the house on a rainy day, that's what she does. Unfortunately she discovers a door, which apparently hides a wall, but in reality it's a secret passage to another world. Could she ask for more than exploring a brand new world? But what she'll see and whom she'll meet out there is really creepy. The problem is that escaping this place isn't as simple as entering it. She will have to gather all her courage and cleverness to save herself, the people she loves the most, three little new friends and a cat! I loved this story.
