Updike. What more can be said. The only writer of his generation to create characters that reflect us all. Flawed, hopeful, lusty, opportunistic, but basically good (well, not especially bad). At least he's more cheerful than Glum Roth, and more consistent than Richard Ford and newish kid on the block Jonathan Franzen (both of whom borrow from Updike).
