CLAIRE RANDALL IS LEADING A DOUBLE LIFE. SHE HAS A HUSBAND IN ONE CENTURY - AND A LOVER IN ANOTHER...

In 1945, Claire Randall is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon in Scotland. Innocently she walks through a stone circle in the Highlands, and finds herself in a violent skirmish taking place in 1743. Suddenly she is a Sassenach, an outlander, in a country torn by war and by clan feuds.

A wartime nurse, Claire can deal with the bloody wounds that face her. But it is harder to deal with the knowledge that she is in Jacobite Scotland and the carnage of Culloden is looming. Marooned amid the passion and violence, the superstition, the shifting allegiances and the fervent loyalties, Claire is in danger from Jacobites and Redcoats - and from the shock of her own desire for James Fraser, a gallant and courageous young Scots warrior. Jamie shows her a passion so fierce and a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire, and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

This is a must. But be careful, there are 6 other books (900 pages each) following this one. What a saga! For romance and history lovers only.

However, the story was a little too smutty to be anything but fluff, but not enough fun to be a guilty pleasure. I found myself rushing through it at the end just so I could be done with it. I will try other things by this author because I think there is a lot of potential.

ETA - I updated this to 3 stars because it's really much better than the other books I ranked as 2 stars, and because I kept thinking back to the characters the day after I finished it and wondering what else might happen to them, so it couldn't have been too dull :)

  • Very good historical fiction... with a touch of fantasy

This is sooo... good. Ok, it's for women, don't bother if you are a man. Claire is a WW2 British nurse who gets transported back in time about 200 years. She meets a cool and sexy Scotish rebel, Jamie... and the ancestor of her husband who turns out to be a real bastard. Although Claire is English, ... (continue)

She meets a cool and sexy Scotish rebel, Jamie... and the ancestor of her husband who turns out to be a real bastard. Although Claire is English, she starts to sympathize with the Scotch freedom fighters. Unfortunately she knows how things will pan out, since she studied it in school. She meets another time traveller. You'd hardly believe this book was written by an American - she is very up to date on the UK

Original plot and interesting characters and set. Not my normal kind of books, but pleasant reading.

  • Abridged audio book

This was one of my favorite books and I decided to re-read it by audio book. As I started to listen, I realized that parts were just left out altogether, a lot of parts, and it didn't have the same feel as the original. Either find the unabridged edition of this audio book (well worth it for the 2/3 of the story that is left out) or read the book. (I know it is 900 pages long but it is great)
