Meet Dexter, a polite wolf in sheep’s clothing . . . a monster who cringes at the site of blood . . . a serial killer whose one golden rule makes him immensely likable: he only kills bad people.

Dexter Morgan isn’t exactly the kind of man you’d bring home to Mom. Though he’s playful and has a wonderfully ironic sense of humor, Dexter’s one character flaw (his proclivity for murder) can be off-putting. But at heart Dexter is the perfect gentleman, supportive of his sister, Deb, a Miami cop, and interested only in doing away with people who really deserve his special visit. Dex is quite good-looking but totally indifferent to (and, frankly, a bit puzzled by) the attentions paid to him by women. Despite the fact that he can’t stand the sight of blood, he works as a blood-spatter analyst for the Miami police department, a job that allows him to keep tabs on the latest crimes and keep an eye open for his next quarry.

Dexter’s well-organized life is suddenly disrupted when a second, much more visible serial killer appears in Miami. Dex is intrigued, even delighted, by the fact that the other killer appears to have a style reminiscent of his own. Yet he can’t help but feel that the mysterious new arrival is not merely invading his turf, but reaching out to him as well. This new killer seems to be doing more than copying Dexter—he seems to be saying, “Come out and play.” Dexter’s secret life makes for a lonely existence . . . even a lovable monster can be intrigued by the prospect of finding a friend.

Introducing one of the most witty and original narrators in years, Jeff Lindsay’s Darkly Dreaming Dexter is a fresh, surprising, and brilliantly executed novel that is sure to receive wide acclaim.

  • Darkly Dreaming Dexter

In writing 'Darkly Dreaming Dexter', his first novel, Jeff Lindsay has done readers two favors, both deeply appreciated. First, he's taken the overdone, bone-tired serial killer novel and turned it on its ear. And second, he's introduced us to the de ... (read full critics)

Maybe I expected too much, because of the tv show, but... meh. So not as good as I was hoping. Dexter is irritating more than likable (sarcastic in an annoying way) and the book has no subtlety at all. (I can't count the number of times Dexter repeated the fact that he's got no emotion. Yeah. Dexter is irritating more than likable (sarcastic in an annoying way) and the book has no subtlety at all. (I can't count the number of times Dexter repeated the fact that he's got no emotion. Yeah. We get it.) I can't figure out how much of my distaste for the book is because of how much I love the show... would I feel the same if I hadn't seen the show first? Probably I would. I think the book made good bones for the show, but thank god the writers could turn it into something more and something better.

2 and a half stars, since i put 3 only because I really liked Dexter's first season on tv.
    Very nice, though some imperfections.

  • I got hooked and then I started to watch the TV series. What a show! Better than the book!

I would only recommend reading this book if you have not watched the series on television. The reason being: Dexter, on TV, is very clever and comes across sincere when he attempts to adapt in the "human" world. In the book however he comes across as a pompous ass who think that he is the only one with any intelligence. I think the book would have been better not being written in first person and if Dexter, or the writer, had not made so many condescending remarks about all the other characters. Note: just because you get away with murder does not make you some kind of super genius.

  • You know from the get-go that the protagonist is a serial killer. It's an incredibly funny book. The t.v. show is great, but the books are even better than the t.v. version.
