  Maybe I expected too much, because of the tv show, but... meh. So not as good as I was hoping.   Maybe I expected too much, because of the tv show, but... meh. So not as good as I was hoping. Dexter is irritating more than likable (sarcastic in an annoying way) and the book has no subtlety at all. (I can't count the number of times Dexter repeated the fact that he's got no emotion. Yeah. We get it.) I can't figure out how much of my distaste for the book is because of how much I love the show... would I feel the same if I hadn't seen the show first? Probably I would. I think the book made good bones for the show, but thank god the writers could turn it into something more and something better.

  2 and a half stars, since i put 3 only because I really liked Dexter's first season on tv.
  Very nice, though some imperfections.

  I would only recommend reading this book if you have not watched the series on television. The reason being: Dexter, on TV, is very clever and comes across sincere when he attempts to adapt in the "human" world.   I would only recommend reading this book if you have not watched the series on television. The reason being: Dexter, on TV, is very clever and comes across sincere when he attempts to adapt in the "human" world. In the book however he comes across as a pompous ass who think that he is the only one with any intelligence. I think the book would have been better not being written in first person and if Dexter, or the writer, had not made so many condescending remarks about all the other characters. Note: just because you get away with murder does not make you some kind of super genius.

  You know from the get-go that the protagonist is a serial killer. It's an incredibly funny book. The t.v. show is great, but the books are even better than the t.v. version.
