According to the blurb, this book is "one of the most celebrated thrillers ever written". It is not an exaggeration. It is really that good.
The first part, <Anatomy of a plot>, is already captivating, with its rich details of the preparation to assassinate General de Gaulle. In the second part, <Anatomy of a manhunt>, the pace quickens continuously, and before long I have found myself flipping page after page, oblivious to where I was and what time it was. The third part, <Anatomy of a kill>, I didn't even notice because I was too desperate to get to the end, in order to catch a breath.
The Day of the Jackal is really a masterpiece. It's so great that from now on, I'll probably compare every thriller-detective novel to it.
