  • Dimitri succeeds to capture the Flemish village atmosphere of the past and in the mean time made me laugh especially in the first part of the book.

But sometimes I hate them; especially those books that you love, and that you don't have in your possession. Those are the worst. You love them, better even, you absolutely adore them. At some stage you've read it after borrowing it from a friend or the library, or even after buying it (and losing it later because you've left it somewhere). And then it's gone. Completely gone! And you see the thing everywhere, you talk about it, you recommend it to people... But you don't have it anymore - you long to read it, to touch it, but you can't.

This has happened to me quite a few times, and usually the solution is solved by my incompetent brain (i.e. I forget about it), or by continuously talking about it to everyone I know until somebody buys it for me. But that didn't happen this time.

So I did what I had to do. I bought it. And I am going to read it again. And again. Because the thing is worth it!! It's a great book: read it! Verhulst is a genius in portraying the greatness of Belgium, and the ramshackle beauty of its culture and people... His vocabulary is one of the most ingenious I've ever seen and the best of all is: he knows how to use it!
