  • More stuff is adding up, I don't see where Mr. Butcher is going yet but "The Dresden Files" are as funny and entertaining as ever.

    Butcher is good at pacing and at keeping a constant balance between fun and glaring implausibilities in his stories.

    Butcher is good at pacing and at keeping a constant balance between fun and glaring implausibilities in his stories.
    Yes, I know... in a series about modern-day magical underground set in Chicago, where "good" wizards battle vampires and other assorted nasties you may wonder what I can find implausible.
    Well, without spoiling anything, I can assure you that the kind of (physical) punishment the main character goes through from the second half of the book onwards starts looking a bit like Pro-level American Wrestling... especially because he keeps getting up and delivering some signature move that always bring the baddies down (no matter how spectacularly badder they are this time).

    I am afraid that the author has definitely lost his narrative control and so to make his cliffhangers cliffier he tends to overdo (badly) the problems the hero has to face. So much that when he finally solves them (which always implies becoming more powerful than he was at the start of the novel) they look a bit hollow. Or they do to me, at least.
