Carles Boix argued that (a) economic inequality frustrates democratization because the rich will lose, so that inequality reduce the probability of survival democracy. (b) Financial openness helps democracy because the capitalists will not support the authoritarianism but exit. (c) In the labor abundant condition, trade openness and economic growth improves equality and fruit democracy.
To clarify the reasons of democratic transition, a world range data-set is necessary. The author's data-set partly took from Przeworski et al (2000) and extended from 1850 to 1990. Moreover, Boix takes the Switzerland in the 1830s and the United States as historical examples. However, In the other chapters Boix puts more issues, such as public expenditure and democratic institutions into the book.
