After reading Hoffmann's Mademoiselle de Scudéri I decided that when we went to Berlin I should try and find some more of his stories, perferably in dual language. However, I had NO luck! It seems Germans just don't make dual language books of his, at least not for sale in regular book shops (I should probable check amazon.de). So instead Bill made me a very lovely dual language copy of Der Sandmann.
I really enjoyed reading this. Normally when I read dual language I get frustrated taking the time to read the other language and just want to get on with the story. But reading the German just added more, I loved the sound of it, picking out the words and sentances I knew. (I think I had about 30 percent comprenhension even after reading the English!) But still having the original did add to my enjoyment.
I really loved the story. I loved how the man was the irrational fearful character and the woman was the voice of reason. I thought the story was spooky and suspensful. I loved the psychological drama of the childhood fear and the way the "sandmann" cast his spell on the hero. I really do want to find more works by Hoffmann as everything I've read of his I've loved, though hopefully I'll find them also in dual language!
