reading this in German has been some effort, and I confess I only did because I had to do an exam about it; but what a great story of (im)morality. By the way: Visconti's movie is not a patch on it, because it portrays Von Aschenbach as a flaming queen from the very beginning (choosing Dirk Bogarde was absolutely wrong, IMHO, however magnificent an actor), while that is totally not the point; Von Aschenbach is morals personified and hates what's happening to him. Much more than a gay fantasy.
