Poi, a poco a poco, la terribile realtà dell'occupazione tedesca e delle persecuzioni antiebraiche si insinua tra le righe del diario. Accanto alla cronaca del suo amore 'totale' per l'analista Julius Spier, leggiamo di amici scomparsi nei lager, di retate di crescenti sanzioni e divieti.
Ma quanto più il cerchio si stringe attorno a lei, tanto più Etty sembra acquistare una straordinaria forza dell'anima. Ed anche se il racconto si conclude nel campo di smistamento di Wsterbork (da cui Etty partirà poi per Auschwitz) questo Diario è la luminosa storia di un cuore innamorato della vita e grondante di coraggio, amore, allegria.
