Great Read!
I tend to look for books that seem realistic and like they could actually happen. This book certainly fit the bill in that respect. I liked the pace at which the book flowed, although sometimes I felt that the characters were somewhat one dimensional, as I never really became attached to any of them ... (continue)

I was quite impressed with this book. It's set in New Orleans which can be hard to capture accurately, but Chris did an excellent job. The main character is Hailey, a young girl whose family seems to be falling apart before her eyes. She struggles with depression, and her belief in God because she k ... (continue)

I know this book is a work of fiction but the whole way through I had to keep reminding myself of this fact. Chris Tusa does a wonderful job of pulling you into 16 year old Hailey's world and what a world it is. Growing up in an underprivileged, dysfunctional family, dealing with a mental illness and everything a typical teenager goes through plus more, Tusa does a great job keeping it disturbingly believable.
Synopsis: Set in the slums of New Orleans, among clusters of crack houses and abandoned buildings, Dirty Little Angels is the story of sixteen year old Hailey Trosclair. When the Trosclair family suffers a string of financial hardships and a miscarriage, Hailey finds herself looking to God to save her family. When her prayers go unanswered, Hailey puts her faith in Moses Watkins, a failed preacher and ex-con. Fascinated by Moses’s lopsided view of religion, Hailey, and her brother Cyrus, begin spending time down at an abandoned bank that Moses plans to convert into a drive-through church. Gradually, though, Moses’s twisted religious beliefs become increasingly more violent, and Hailey and Cyrus soon find themselves trapped in a world of danger and fear from which there may be no escape.
While it is not something I would normally read, I will definitely be trying to get my hands on his future work.
