English Literature. That's ages ago. I did that in my high school and barely read any since then. However in my limited knowledge on the subject, e.e. cummings remains to be my favorite poet. I love his way in doing poetry. His message is conveyed through style, through words itself. His work could not be understood literally. If you try to make sense of his stuff word by word, you will only get frustration. He describes the movement of winds through lines of broken word:
"l
e
af"
(Not sure it is the exact lines though), and sound (using "sh" or "s" consecutively). You have to put your idea of grammar aside, just to FEEL the mood he tries to bring upon in your face. Words become a breeze: how could you describe moonlit when you are too focus on the molecule or different physics theories? Somehow we are touched or moved by things we cannot explain. And I always think it is how we should understand e.e. cummings.
The collection of works are not annotated, however for "reading-solely-for-enjoyment", I think it is the best collection of work? According to Amazon and the editor of this work, they have put all published and unpublished work into this volume. They also edit the style as loyal as to the original idea of e.e. cummings. (Well it is neccessary as his work is style-free and most of his contemporary could not accept ... somehow the type-setting went wrong in the first run.) To me, I always think this kind of "complete work" is a good pick for home library.
