Book Description
This beautifully written, heartfelt memoir touched a nerve among both readers and reviewers. Elizabeth Gilbert tells how she made the difficult choice to leave behind all the trappings of modern American success (marriage, house in the country, career) and find, instead, what she truly wanted from life. Setting out for a year to study three different aspects of her nature amid three different cultures, Gilbert explored the art of pleasure in Italy and the art of devotion in India, and then a balance between the two on the Indonesian island of Bali. By turns rapturous and rueful, this wise and funny author (whom Booklist calls Anne Lamott's hip, yoga- practicing, footloose younger sister) is poised to garner yet more adoring fans.

Meh. Beginning was interesting, but by the end it was a struggle to finish. Seemed VERY embellished at times, though the ultimate messages conveyed were no doubt good enough for me to take some to heart. Found the author mildly irritating.
The only negative thing I have to say about this book is how envious I was of the author getting paid to have such a self-fulfilling adventure!
Elizabeth Gilbert tells such an inspiring, personal story. I couldn't help but find myself smiling throughout the book and feeling a warm sense of peace and love wash over me.
This is a book I want to hold onto and most definitely read again.
Divorced, enraged and depressed, the author embarked on a journey to Italy, India, and Indonesia, to recoup all her losses in life. It touched me in a way that it's truly an adventure and exploration in womanhood, via marriage, religion, family, and the simple love for food and language.
Different people get a piece of different things out of this travelogue of places (Italy, India & Indonesia) and the mind.
A thoroughly enjoyable read, speaks to the free spirits that yearn to be freed from an over-achieving, rigid and materialistic urban life. Thumbs up.

A very provocative proposal. Love it.
While I didn't really feel that I could relate to the depths of despair that afflicted this woman before she set off on her journey of self-discovery, I certainly would love to be able to take a year off of life myself to do something like this.
