No, I was never able to speak Chinese sentences. But I knew enough words and numbers to barter in the markets.
And I meant, if I was given a Chinese menu, I could read what the dish was, or at least know some ingredient or get some idea of the dish, for about 20% of the dishes on the menu! Not bad for about 15 hours of study with no previous knowledge of a non-Roman language. That's why I think the book is good.
