A new, international bestseller by the author of The Alchemist tells the story of Maria, a young girl from a Brazilian village, whose first innocent brushes with love leave her heartbroken. At a tender age, she becomes convinced that she will never find true love, instead believing that "Love is a terrible thing that will make you suffer ..." A chance meeting in Rio takes her to Geneva, where she dreams of finding fame and fortune. Instead, she ends up working as a prostitute.

In Geneva, Maria drifts further and further away from love as she develops a fascination with sex. Eventually, Maria's despairing view of love is put to the test when she meets a handsome young painter. In this odyssey of self-discovery, Maria has to choose between pursuing a path of darkness, sexual pleasure for its own sake, or risking everything to find her own "inner light" and the possibility of sacred sex, sex in the context of love.

In this gripping and daring new novel, Paulo Coelho sensitively explores the sacred nature of sex and love and invites us to confront our own prejudices and demons and embrace our own "inner light."

    Why is Paulo Coelho so successful? That is the question I hear most often from journalists. But if readers imagine I can answer it, they had better stop reading now. My creative process goes against a "recipe for success"; my books have different the ... (read full critics)

    A book beginning with a girl of searching true Love and believing in Forever Romance Relationship. As many other love stories and also in reality, bubble breaks when it rises high in the sky.

    There are many Sex scene and description... more than expected. The more impressive and I think most people would finally agree is, Love (between man and woman) is a wonderful journey but also an uncontrollable path regardless if there is Sex while Sex would be an encounter along with Love. Love before Sex is a fantasy, Love after Sex is a reality.

    A Prostitute experienced or so call realized that Peace in going through Pain by nature along the adventures is much treasurable/long lasting/relieving than Pleasure in Sex humiliation ... People in general loves to blame, torture oneself to revenge on the guilt they commit, the freedom from sin is just to forgive oneself so, they is able to love and enjoy being loved.

    It is still going back to the first note of song of love: (1 Corinthians: 13:4-8) (Bible in Basic Eng)

    Love is never tired of waiting; love is kind; love has no envy; love has no high opinion of itself, love has no pride;
    Love's ways are ever fair, it takes no thought for itself; it is not quickly made angry, it takes no account of evil;
    It takes no pleasure in wrongdoing, but has joy in what is true;
    Love has the power of undergoing all things, having faith in all things, hoping all things.
    Though the prophet's word may come to an end, tongues come to nothing, and knowledge have no more value, love has no end.

    The story brings out Desires in Romance relationship. It is not trying to give an answer above all or in fact Love is a journey which looks similar for all people but is also unique to every individual.

    Liked the book. The book gives a good description about what role desire is playing in western society.
