The book uses a novel premise of the afterlife to encourage you to think about what is important your 'real life'. As such, I think it is a great book for teenage/young adults to find some inspiration in troubling times.

I enjoyed this Young Adult novel. It was a unique story about what might happen in the afterlife. Liz, a fifteen year old girl wakes up on a boat and discovers that she was hit by a car and now she is on her way to "Elsewhere", what the afterlife in this book is called. Liz definitely isn't accepting of her fate and the book takes off from there. It wasn't a sappy book at all but it did have some emotional moments. Zevin certainly came up with some very interesting ideas. I was especially fond of reading about the animals in Elsewhere.

This is narrated by 15 yr old Liz who has been tragically killed in a hit & run. It's her journey from earth to Elsewhere and how she is dealing w/being killed before she really had a chance to live. She makes friends along the way and listens to their story. She observes her family and friends mourning her loss from places called Observation Decks. She experiences a mix of emotions along the way.

I have the feeling that the author was just shooting from the hip as she wrote the story which, to me, makes the story seem long and not very interesting. I personally find it lacking in an ability to pull me into the story. The the first word that comes to mind to explain this book is "boring". In theory, the basis for the story is good but the details where lacking.

  • Interesting Premise

I saw this book in the library while waiting on my son. I picked it up and started to read. I thought the story was very good. An interesting view of the afterlife.

  • I thought that "Elsewhere" lacked a plot that kept the reader interrested (which is why I quit reading it), and it also had far too many sexual and drug referrences for a book aimed at teens/tweens.
