Renowned psychologist Paul Ekman explains the roots of our emotionsanger, fear, disgust, sadness, and happinessand shows how they cascade across our faces, providing clear signals to those who can identify the clues. As featured in Malcolm Gladwells bestseller Blink, Ekmans Facial Action Coding System offers intense training in recognizing feelings in spouses, children, colleagues, even strangers on the street. In Emotions Revealed, Ekman distills decades of research into a practical, mind-opening, and life-changing guide to reading the emotions of those around us. He answers such questions as: How does our body signal to others whether we are slightly sad or anguished, peeved or enraged? Can we learn to distinguish between a polite smile and the genuine thing? Can we ever truly control our emotions? Packed with unique exercises and photographs, and a new chapter on emotions and lying that encompasses security and terrorism as well as gut decisions, Emotions Revealed is an indispensable resource for navigating our emotional world

Interesting to know that some emotional expressions are universal. Dr Ekman is not only creative in his hypotheses, but also diligent in proving his points. He writes to teach how to recognise subtle emotions, functions of every of those emotions, as well as how to handle them. Besides, it helps me to communicate my feelings. However, as Dr Ekman also mentioned, the book only deals with the major five clusters of emotions - sadness and agony, anger, surprise and fear, disgust and contempt, enjoyable emotions. Other emotions that are not unfamiliar, such as embarrassment, shame and guilt, are left out. At the end of the book, there are photos to test your ability in face-reading.

  • This book talks about how our facial expression reveals our emotion. However, I find this work is rather superficial, lacking the depth in analyzing the reason behind.

Ekman leverages his research on facial expressions to explore human emotion in Emotions Revealed. At the most basic level, the book serves as a guide to perceiving and understanding emotions in oneself and others. More thought-provoking, though, are Ekman's insights into emotion as a driver of behavior and his conjectures as to the evolutionary bases for emotion. For the motivated reader, references to academic research are provided.
