This is unconventional science-fiction. It demands much of the reader as it presents a puzzle that very gradually unfolds towards the end. It takes the reader some time to start realizing that the puzzle in the book can be solved, that there are clues to what sort of world is being described that the characters do not know, but you as the reader do know. I do not want to spoil any surprises so I will just say that in part this science-fiction is based on certain things that should be familiar to you, to your experience of the world today. It is great fun to see all the mystery unravel before you.
This is certainly literature. Very seldom does one encounter science-fiction so intelligent, so dense, and so beautifully written. Crowley rightly deserves his reputation and the many awards he has won for his books. This little book is one of his best by all accounts and if you can handle a bit of a challenge then read this book - it is not so difficult that you will not be able to appreciate it, it merely respects readers as intelligent and presents its puzzle-story accordingly....Continua
