"Essays in Love" will appeal to anyone who has ever been in a relationship or confused about love. The book charts the progress of a love affair from the first kiss to argument and reconciliation, from intimacy and tenderness to the onset of anxiety and heartbreak. The work's genius lies in the way it minutely analyses emotions we've all felt before but have perhaps never understood so well: it includes a chapter on the anxieties of when and how to say 'I love you' and another on the challenges of disagreeing with someone else's taste in shoes. While gripping the reader with the talent of a great novelist, de Botton brings a philosopher's sensibility to his analyses of the emotions of love, resulting in a genre-breaking book that is at once touching and thought-provoking. 'The book's success has much to do with its beautifully modelled sentences, its wry humour and its unwavering deadpan respect for its reader's intelligence ...full of keen observation and flashes of genuine lyricism, acuity and depth' - Francine Prose, New Republic.

    Amazingly well-written!

Romantic love is such an impossibly complicated topic on which to write a good non-fiction book, but Alain de Botton manages to do the impossible - and does it in amazing style.

Telling from the first-person perspective of a man falling in and out of love, de Botton tracks his actions, thoughts, feelings, elations and agonies throughout his journey of love. The real gem of the story lies in the introspections of the man, which contain de Botton's own philosophical insights and centuries-old wisdom.

What the man goes through has also gone through in almost every one of us, but it takes a great author like de Botton to distill its essence and lay it out for us to absorb - all in about a lightweight 200 pages.

If you're the type that likes to ruminate on matters of the heart in your mind, this book is definitely for you.

  • If there is a recent book that I enjoyed very much - this is it. If there is a recent book that I enjoyed very much - this is it. Here there was a story of the teller unravelling what immediate attraction and then the love affair taken its usual up and down and eventually dissolved. The best thing of the story is the fact that the storyteller's good friend had stolen the girl. Thats life and its littered with great little insights which brings one many a smile and acknowledging that all lovers in the world behave in exactly the same way.
