"An astonishing feat" - "The Times". A young man arrives in the Ukraine, clutching in his hand a tattered photograph. He is searching for the woman who fifty years ago saved his grandfather from the Nazis. Unfortunately, he is aided in his quest by Alex, a translator with an uncanny ability to mangle English into bizarre new forms; a "blind" old man haunted by memories of the war; and an undersexed guide dog named Sammy Davis Jr, Jr. What they are looking for seems elusive - a truth hidden behind veils of time, language and the horrors of war. What they find turns all their worlds upside down.

Meraviglioso.

Activity was replaced with thought. Memory. Everything reminded everyone of something,
but quickly became devitalizing. Memory begat memory begat memory.
Memory was supposed to fill the time, but it made time a hole to be filled.
Memories are small prayers to God, if we believed in that sort of thing.
Each second is two hundred yards, to be walked, crawled. You can’t see the next hour, it is so far in the distance. Tomorrow is over the horizon, and will take an entire day to reach.
The only thing more painful than being an active forgetter is to be an inert rememberer.
Melancholy is a fraction of memory like that melancholy which makes Grandfather unhealthful, and it is what makes him blind, although he is not truly blind.
He is having memories for when he was only a
boy, and not an old man and he often cries having the photograph of Augustine in his hands.
Augustine, the girl who saved grandfather from the Nazis.
It is said that the Messiah will come at the end of the world and that Jews are those things that God loves. Since roses are beautiful, they must assume that God loves them. Therefore, roses are Jewish. By the same reasoning, the stars and planets are Jewish, all children are Jewish, pretty “art” is Jewish.
When Nazi came it was the end of the world, Grandfather usually says and the Messiah did not come.
This was the lesson he learned from everything that happened : there is no God.
Grandfather cannot believe in a God that cannot stop what happened.
He does not believe in man, either.
However he is not a bad person, he says , he is a good person who has lived in a bad time.
Everything he did, he did because he thought it was the correct thing to do, even if he was not a hero, like to kill his best friend Herschel
Herschel was a Jew and Grandfather did what he did to save his son from Nazi, because a
father is always responsible for his son.
He loved him so much that he made love impossible.
And if there is no love in the world, we
will make a new world, and we will give it heavy walls, and we will furnish it with soft red interiors, from the inside out, and give it a knocker that resonates like a diamond falling to a jeweler’s felt so that we should
    never hear it.
    Everything will be illuminated.

Ironico e crudele nello stesso momento, riesci a crederlo??
