    Appiah makes his case for the impact of the results from scientific research (mainly in experimental psychology) on philosophical academics. When philosophers say that a virtuous character is what humans should strive for and believe that is an attainable ideal, what about experiments that seem to show that how we react depends on the situation we're in? We can say that helpfulness is a desirable character-trait, but when experiments show that our helpfulness depends on whether we are in a hurry or not, or even whether we smell fresh-baked croissants, what does that do to the idea of character?
    This book is very well written too.
