In the second collection of Fables, Bill Willingham reveals his real intention with the series. He strips his Fables of the layers of Disnefied innocence they have accumulated over the years and gives them back the cruelty and brutality that have all too often been edited out of our age-old favourites. The result is not pretty - also literally, because in this volume the penciller is Mark Buckingham. Me not like. He does okay on the animals, but he draws people as if it were a painful duty - and not one he's particularly good at fulfilling. Fortunately we have James Jean's exceedingly pretty and clever covers.

  • Frankly, this is still my favourite story arc for 'Fables'. The actual battle is so epic somehow.
