  • 'Faithful Place': The Comforts and Terrors of Life at Home in Dublin

More a “fated” place than a “faithful” place, this Dublin street is where Frank Mackey investigates his girlfriend’s fate after she vanished the night they were to elope, 22 years ago. He works undercover, but this case, taken on clandestinely, chall ... (read full critics)

  • 'Faithful Place' by Tana French

I have Irish writer Tana French to thank for getting me out of my recent fictional reading slump. I read this novel, her third, in just a couple of days and found it enormously entertaining if slightly over-written -- and over-wrought -- in places. F ... (read full critics)

It's not really full of suspenses and twists but it's a bit predictable, especially towards the last one-quarter of the book. I guess the author tries to treat you with how the characters have felt in their struggles with their lives, rather than entertaining you with mysteries and thrillers. Frank ... (continue)

It's not really full of suspenses and twists but it's a bit predictable, especially towards the last one-quarter of the book. I guess the author tries to treat you with how the characters have felt in their struggles with their lives, rather than entertaining you with mysteries and thrillers. Frank has had quite a few of flashbacks of his good times with Rosie. But I kind of don't really bother with those details and I'd just like to find out who was the killer. I feel pity for the Mackey and Daly families or essentially all families living in Faithful Place ! Poor families don't necessarily lead to unhappiness and it's strange to me that there isn't one family with happy parents. I've nevertheless learnt some words which may be "typical" in Ireland that the author likes to use a lot such as arse, bollix, fecking, Jaysus, gob etc.

  • I'd read more Tana French - this was my first but I did get bogged down. Maybe just my mood for this Irish FAMILY stuff...but very well written; absolutely.

In this one, young Frank is going to run away with Rosie to England, so they can get as far away from their crazy familes as they can and start a life together. Frank waits for Rosie for hours. When she doesn't show, he leaves anyway and then spends the next 22 years wondering why she stood him up. 22 years later, he finds some answers, but not the ones he had been hoping for.
