La protagonosta Fanny perde la sua "innocenza" all'età di 15 anni e impara a sfruttare le proprie grazie per sopravvivere e farsi strada nel mondo. John Cleland non usa tutta la farina del suo sacco narrativo inglese. Trae ispirazione, infatti, dalla moda francese per la narrativa erotica del tempo. E non poteva essere diversamente! La tendenza è il genere in voga allora per le autobiografie delle prostitute la cui vita era un monito contro i tormenti derivanti dalla indulgenza sessuale. L'autore però non intende punire Fanny per la sua promiscuità e il libro si conclude con il felice matrimonio dell'eroina.
Bisogna dire che Fanny non è una figura pornografica, in senso moderno. Infatti rifiuta gli atti eterosessuali e si rivela così una "conservatrice". Si disgusta agli incontri lesbici e all'omosessualità maschile. Questo libro è sopravvissuto a tre secoli di infamia ed è un'opera importante per lo sviluppo del genere narrativo del romanzo.
