The memoirs of the polar expedition of Fridtjof Nansen are fascinating. Without computers, GPS or other technical marvels commonly used just 100 years after, he initiated an expedition to prove a scientifically-backed intuition he had.

The ship he designed to deal specifically with icy waters and to be trapped for a long period in the ice (the Fram) was used in two more scientific expeditions, including Amundsen's exploration of the South Pole. The vessel still exists and it can be visited in its own museum in Norway.

Another interesting aspect is the preparedness of the expedition and the participants. This is something that other explorers don't seem to have paid the required attention to.

The first volume finishes on a kind of cliff-hanger that makes the reading of the second volume necessary.
