Steinberg's classic work covers the history of printing with movable type in the following periods: the creative century from 1450-1550 which witnessed the invention and beginnings of practically every single feature that characterizes the modern printing piece, the era of consolidation from 1550-1800, the 19th century in which the era of mechanization began the invention of lithography and ended with Morris's rediscovery of the Middle Ages, the heyday of the private presses from 1900-1950 and finally, the postwar world.
