  • The Best Reviews: Jim Butcher, Fool Moon

"Harry is a maverick, saving humanity in spite of mankind's ridicule." The claw marks, footprint, and carnage look as if a werewolf is on the loose even though most Second City residents scoff at the notion of a shiftchanger. After working with wizar ... (read full critics)

Another great story from Butcher! I listened to the audio version of the story and it was really great. James Marsters, better known as Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, really was the voice of Harry Dresden. Right from the beginning, I was captivated by the story and just had to keep on reading. The story itself was really interesting. Werewolves in Chicago? I guess stranger things have happened. Just when you thought the story was heading one way, Butcher took you another way. I enjoyed the entire ride and recommend this book, especially if you are looking for a fun, short read.

  • My thoughts

Although it's been a while since I've read a Dresden Files book, I had no problems getting back in the magical world of Harry Dresden. I enjoyed all the twists and surprises, and I liked Harry learning about different types of shape shifting. I look forward to reading the next Dresden Files book, Gr ... (continue)

  • Second in the series - The Dresden Files

I enjoyed this one about as much as the first. Not great, but good.

  • Werewolves rock (especially The Alphas)

There just aren't enough decent werewolf books. This has four different varieties of werewolves (5 if you count Tera). And Bob gets to make the classic werewolf joke from Young Frankenstein.

  • Entertaining, but average

Harry Dresden is a wizard. Most people in Chicago don’t believe in magic or wizards, Science has seen to that, but he still gets called in to assist the police on occasion. Their Special Investigation department may be not be the dream assignment but police there still have to work. Although recently Harry hasn’t received too much business from them. A result of what happened in the first book I’m guessing, seeing as I didn’t read that. But when there are a series of extremely violent deaths Murphy, head of Special Investigations, comes calling. It looks like werewolves are on the loose.

This style of urban fantasy/horror seems to be showing up more and more. Of course there is Laurell K Hamilton’s series which is still bewilderingly popular, and this is in a similar vein. Well, similar to the early ones in that series, there is less focus on sex. And of course in Hamilton’s world everyone knows about the monsters. In Dresden’s most people don’t. But they have the same general tone; murders, crimes, monsters, bit of humour, narrator addressing the reader, all that sort of thing.

Fool Moon is an average book. Nothing special, but it isn’t a bad read either, perfect for some light entertainment. If you are prepared to accept descriptions of blood splattered corpses of course.
