  Before she traded up to the bigger brother of her previous publisher, Karin slaughter had an edge that perfectly rode the line between safe, acceptable and dark, queasy unmentionable subject matters. Since the rise, that edge is gone, which is a shame and will be missed by this reader, since it made her stand out from other authors who wished they had the courage to tread that close to the edge. In this new novel, Slaughter seems to have traded on the edge darkness with characters that all fall into a dysfunctional category. I find it unrealistic that the main character, the victim's father, the main suspect are all orphans and suffer from some form of Dyslexia or reading disability and this is before you add in the victim herself which is also hampered by reading difficulties even though she is 'Thank God', not an orphan. Add in Amanda, the cold hearted, mean mouthed bitch of a boss and you have to wonder why this book is not about suicides instead of murder and kidnapping. I hate tearing this apart like this, since I am a big fan of Karin slaughter, I love her previous style and her no fear approach to subjects no other author would dare go near. I have to even admit, even with all the multiple characters suffering from the same problems, Will grew on me as well as his unwanted partner Faith Mitchell. It is only out of curiosity for these characters and Karin's style that I hope to see them grow, become better real characters that endear themselves to the reader through their own personalities instead of depending on us feeling sorry for them because of their flaws.

  She writes a good story, however...

  This book was very wordy and it didn't have to be that way. It was very hard to get into in the beginning and picked up midway through and stayed at a great pace from then on. It was a good story just slow going.
