  • More than fiddle-de-dee

Gone with the Wind, both the film and the book, has long been a key staging post in female adolescence. For generations its lush melodrama, dodgy sexual politics and great frock opportunities have sung out to any young girl yearning for something she ... (read full critics)

  • What the Wind Blew In

“Gone With the Wind,” the quintessential Hollywood movie, has long deserved to be rescued from critical disdain and given its correct place among American pop masterpieces, like “The Godfather” and “On the Waterfront” and “E.T.,” that enlighten as mu ... (read full critics)

The cover image (a b&w photo of Vivien Leigh lit to cast a huge shadow)serves as a preview for what the reader will find inside. Gone With the Wind became a phenomenon which dominated the lives of all involved with it, and in producer David O. Selznick's case, might have destroyed his. The book provided escape for a Depression-weary reading oublic, while the movie entertained with perfectly-cast actors giving passionate, committed performances of a literate screenplay. Film audiences still reeling from the Depression could and did cheer the heroine who shook her fist at Heaven and challenged God to watch as she vowed never to be hungry again.
The author analyzes the main creators of GWTW, and shows how each of them brought emotional and temperamental parts of themselves to the book and movie. After reading this, GWTW haters might still hate, but hopefully they will grudgingly acknowledge the substance behind the 70 plus years of success which GWTW has enjoyed.
Film lovers, history lovers,GWTW lovers, feminist scholars and those who merely want something different to read should take note.
