  Furore, furore che serpeggia tra le orde di migranti che la Grande Depressione getta sull'ultima spiaggia della California alla ricerca di un sogno e alla scoperta di un incubo fatto di sfruttamento e ingiustizia. Pagine incredibilmente toccanti e tristemente attuali, mettono il lettore al fianco della famiglia Joad che implacabilmente affonda nella palude dove il capitalismo lascia marcire i reietti. Un libro che tutti dovrebbero leggere!

  ..." Come è possibile vivere senza le cose che sono la nostra vita? Spogli del nostro passato non ci riconosciamo. Fa niente, non c'è posto, bisogna lasciarlo, bruciarlo.
  E sugli sgabelli superstiti le donne guardavano il loro passato con occhi sognanti e lo bruciavano nella loro memoria. Poi si riscuotevano di soprassalto, e ammucchiavan la roba sull'aia e v'appiccavano il fuoco, ma restavano a guardare le fiamme distruggere la loro vita. Poi, frenetiche, aiutavan gli uomini a caricare l'autocarro, e l'autocarro partiva sollevando una nuvola di polvere."...

  Scritto ieri in America, ma non solo. Scritto oggi in tante parti del mondo. E domani, di nuovo, sarà scritto un'altra volta

  "One man, one family driven from the land; this rusty car creaking along the highway to the west. I lost my land, a single tractor took my land. I am alone and I am bewildered. And in the night one family camps in a ditch and another family pulls in and the tents come out. The two men squat on their hams and the women and children listen. Here is the node, you who hate change and fear revolution. Keep these two squatting men apart; make them hate, fear, suspect each other. Here is the anlage of the thing you fear. This is the zygote. For here `I lost my land` is changed; a cell is split and from its splitting grows the thing you hate `We lost our land.` The danger is here, for two men are not as lonely and perplexed as one.
