This book applies Transactional Analysis on Alcholics.
Adult, Parent, Child.
What is important is Child. There are sub-Adult, sub-Parent and Sub-Child inside Child. Sub-Parent (or Adapted Child) is a fixated ego, a copycat of their child's actual parents. Sub-Adult is "Professort", the budding adult who do observation, understanding and analysis. The Sub-Child is the natural child. The little prince of princess....
Well, a kid is a prince until his parents (witch mother) turn him into a frog. A kid is a princess until her parents (orgre) turn her into a cleaning maid. The parents do this "curse" by banding the kids from all kinds of thing: don't think, don't show anger, don't be happy... etc.
Once the kids make a decision on these scripts, they will play the same game for their whole life.
For Alcholics, they have the same game behind, in summary:
I am nogood, and you are ok (haha).
Alcoholic put himself in a position of being obviously disapproved of, allowing those who disapprove to appear virtuous and blameless when the situation, when eamined, shows that they are not only not virtuous and blamelss, but foolish and full of blam. Thus the "haha" acutally means: "You are NOT ok!"
There are 3 types:
1. Drunk and Proud: "You're good, I'm bad (try and stop me)"
If you try to stop him, you will either feel like a cold-hearted bith (Persecutor) or being forgiving, loving and acceptive, and turn yourself into a total fool, A Patsy.
Aim of D&P: Guilt free expression of aggression.
D&P does not usually make the transition to Wino because, while basically interested in aggressively proving that others are no good, he is unwilling to sacrifice his limbs and body. When his bodily integrity becomes endangered, often after an attack of Delirium tremens, he usually stop drinking, or controls it so as to remain intact.
To D&P, the addictive aspects of alcohol are of little or no interest, since his primary interest is to anger others with his game. To the Lush or Wino, tissue addiction is usually a requirement, since alcohol is taken for its tissue-destructive scripts - which Lush often is and Wino always is.
2. Lush: "I am crazy (depressed), you can make me feel better (cure me), haha!"
Aim: Sexual deprivation and procurement of strokes.
It is usually a mid-age women, who is craving for love, and stroke from hudsband, friends and relative... hey, what is the advantage of being crazy of depressed?? You get a lot more attention!
10-15% of Lush end up into Wino.
Wino: "I am sick (try and avoid that), you're well (haha)."
Aim: Oral deprivation and procurement of oral gratification.
Wino is self-destructive, willing to scarify his boidly integrity to the point of putting his survival on the line, which practically forces others to take care of him.
Transactional analysis takes the view that an alcoholic needs permission not to drink, because he is under duress to do so. It is because, a alcoholic is involved in a script, and that a script is the result of parental injunctions. That means, the alcoholic is under orders to drink, and needs permission not to.
This is a parent-to-child combine with adult-to-adult.
Therapist (P): Stop drinking!
Patient (C): Ok.
Adult (A): You have to stay sober to keep your job.
Patient (A): That makes sense.
Since it is scaring to break old habits and enter into new ones, therapist need to play protection at time, to support the patient. However, alcholic can easily turn a Protection call, into a game, turning the therapist into Rescurer.
Patient (C): I am scared
Therapist (P): Don't worry, everything will be ok.
