In a garden surrounded by a tall fence, tucked away behind a small, quiet house in an even smaller town, is an apple tree that is rumored to bear a very special sort of fruit. In this luminous debut novel, Sarah Addison Allen tells the story of that enchanted tree, and the extraordinary people who tend it.…

The Waverleys have always been a curious family, endowed with peculiar gifts that make them outsiders even in their hometown of Bascom, North Carolina. Even their garden has a reputation, famous for its feisty apple tree that bears prophetic fruit, and its edible flowers, imbued with special powers. Generations of Waverleys tended this garden. Their history was in the soil. But so were their futures.

A successful caterer, Claire Waverley prepares dishes made with her mystical plants—from the nasturtiums that aid in keeping secrets and the pansies that make children thoughtful, to the snapdragons intended to discourage the attentions of her amorous neighbor. Meanwhile, her elderly cousin, Evanelle, is known for distributing unexpected gifts whose uses become uncannily clear. They are the last of the Waverleys—except for Claire’s rebellious sister, Sydney, who fled Bascom the moment she could, abandoning Claire, as their own mother had years before.

When Sydney suddenly returns home with a young daughter of her own, Claire’s quiet life is turned upside down—along with the protective boundary she has so carefully constructed around her heart. Together again in the house they grew up in, Sydney takes stock of all she left behind, as Claire struggles to heal the wounds of the past. And soon the sisters realize they must deal with their common legacy—if they are ever to feel at home in Bascom—or with each other.

Enchanting and heartfelt, this captivating novel is sure to cast a spell with a style all its own….

  • It tries to follow the "magical reality" style of "Afrodite" by Isabel Allende or " Like Water for Chocolate" by Laura Esquivel but lacks the emotional depth and the detailed, genuine complex characters from those novels.
Still a very charming, easy and delightful read.
    3 1/2 stars!

This amazing book is given as another birthday gift. Not only is the cover eye-catching, the story is incredibly interesting. I'm a very polarized reader. If the story is based on reality, I expect it to be as real as possible; anything too good to be true, I won't be convinced. If the story is base ... (continue)

This amazing book is given as another birthday gift. Not only is the cover eye-catching, the story is incredibly interesting. I'm a very polarized reader. If the story is based on reality, I expect it to be as real as possible; anything too good to be true, I won't be convinced. If the story is based on legends, make it as magical as possible, just bring me into a magical world and I will be totally absorbed.

This is how the book affects on me. I was totally absorbed...... couldn't let go and finished it in a few days (yet complaining in heart that it's too short). It's a story about an old town in North California where people have heavy sense of family names. Each family has its own uniqueness. For instance, the Clark women are born to be pretty and sexy. They always marry well and keep their men's hearts by their bedroom skills. On the other hand, the Hoptinks men always fall in love with older women. The Waverleys - protagonist in the story, owns a mysterious garden where grow magic plants and an apple tree. The apple tree grows apples which tells you the biggest event in life. The story develops from 2 Waverley sisters who had been apart for 10 years. One day, the younger one returned with her daughter and she tried to rebuild her sisterhood while overcoming a lot of overwhelming rumors and gossip among the neighbours.

The story touches me because it's part of a love and family story, it's yet realistic and magical. Even the apple tree plays a very characteristic role in the fiction!

  • Great book! A little bit of magic inhabits the life of the Waverly sisters but the book is really about families coming together. This book has everything- romance, suspense, serious issues. I would highly recommend it.
