This is an incredibly intense book. Steven Pressfield effectively transports the reader into ancient Greece. He doesn't pull any punches when it comes to portraying the violence of this era and particularly the battle of the Thermopylae, where 300 highly trained Spartan warriors held off tens-of-thousands of invading Persian troops for more than a week. The reader is right there on the battle field, a witness to the all horror that is hand-to-hand combat.
